A JOURNEY FROM ENGLAND
When a couple reaches out from halfway around the world to work with you, there’s an undeniable sense of responsibility to capture their day with the utmost care and attention. When Marion and Steve contacted me from Birmingham, England, with plans to have their engagement session and wedding within just 72 hours of each other, I knew this was going to be a special adventure. It was an honor to be entrusted with their story, and I couldn’t wait to help bring their vision to life.
After exchanging a few excited WhatsApp messages, we were all set to meet for the first time at their engagement session. Our chosen location was Bow Valley Ranche, a picturesque restaurant tucked away within Fish Creek Park in Calgary, Alberta. This urban provincial park is a true hidden gem. It beautifully preserves the natural valley of Fish Creek, with lush forests, winding trails, and sweeping views -- all providing a stunning backdrop for photos. The park’s wild, untamed charm made it the perfect place for a romantic engagement session.
The weather, however, had a bit of a different plan. On the day we met, the rain seemed determined to follow Marion and Steve 'across the pond'. We couldn’t help but laugh, joking about how they’d brought the British weather with them. Despite the downpour, we didn’t let it stop us. In fact, once the heavy rain softened into a light drizzle, it turned out to be an unexpected gift. The cool, damp air gave the park a fresh, dewy look, and the rain made the greens of the trees and the earthy browns of the trails pop in a way that made the photos even more vibrant.
There was something truly magical about the way the rain seemed to add depth and mood to the day. It wasn’t just about the photos, but the feeling we created together in the moment. Despite the chill, the session was full of laughter, easy conversation, and a lot of warmth. We took our time getting to know one another, sharing stories and building rapport before the big day. By the time we wrapped up, I felt like we had already shared so much, and the excitement for their upcoming wedding was palpable.
What I love most about being a photographer is the chance to be part of such intimate moments in people’s lives. Marion and Steve’s journey -- starting with this rainy but unforgettable engagement session -- was a reminder of the beauty in every detail, even when things don’t go exactly as planned. I couldn’t wait for what was to come in the next 72 hours, knowing we had already created something truly special.
