A HELICOPTER WEDDING ADVENTURE IN CANMORE
Jessica and Russell reached out early last February to inquire about photography for their wedding in Canmore, Alberta. Their call came as I was driving back from a dreamy wedding in Banff and I was immediately thrilled to learn about their plans (which included the incredible opportunity for my very first helicopter wedding)!
From the start, Jessica and Russell made it clear that their wedding would be a celebration of their authentic selves. They shared their love of tattoos, a mutual adoration for The Addams Family (affectionately calling themselves Morticia and Gomez), and their devotion to their children. With a bride set on a black wedding dress and Doc Martens, the uniqueness of their day promised visuals unlike any other and it absolutely delivered.
Their ceremony took place in the soft mid-morning light, framed by the iconic Three Sisters in Canmore. Surrounded by their children and bridal party, Jessica and Russell exchanged personally written vows that were equal parts emotional and heartfelt, declaring their love in a way that left everyone present deeply moved. The children’s excitement was palpable, both during the ceremony and as part of the adventure that followed, adding layers of joy and authenticity to the day.
After a quick group image and several wedding party photos, we made our way to the helicopter for a once-in-a-lifetime flight. The children’s enthusiasm was infectious as we approached the aircraft, and the adults couldn’t help but share in their excitement. After a brief safety tutorial and some obligatory disclaimers, we lifted off, soaring over the Canmore valley. As we passed the north-facing side of the mountain, hundreds of mountain sheep came into view, grazing peacefully on the slopes, while playful marmots darted across the meadow below -- a whimsical touch of nature that perfectly complemented the day.
We landed in a stunning alpine meadow, surrounded by dramatic peaks and rolling hills, to capture intimate portraits, candid moments, and family photos. The helicopter flight had already set the tone for adventure, and the children’s laughter and awe continued to shine as they explored the location and interacted with their parents. Every frame captured not just the grandeur of the mountains, but the love, joy, and playful spirit of Jessica, Russell, and their family.
Jessica and Russell’s Canmore wedding was a beautiful reminder that weddings don’t have to follow tradition to be extraordinary. By embracing their individuality, their love for adventure, and the people most important to them, they created a day that was unforgettable, full of laughter, love, and authentic moments -- set against one of Alberta’s most breathtaking landscapes.
